This is a field full of confident, wrong information. Sites sell registrations that don't exist and promise rights nobody has. Here are the rules we hold our own pages to.
Where Our Information Comes From
For anything about the law, we cite primary sources: the text of the Fair Housing Act, HUD guidance, Department of Justice ADA guidance, Department of Transportation rules, and actual state statutes.
We do not cite competitor websites. While building this site we compared several of the biggest ESA sites and found they contradicted each other on basic facts, including which bill created a given state's law. That is not a source.
What We Will Not Publish
- That any registry, certificate, or ID card gives an animal legal rights, because none does
- That an ESA letter gets an animal into an aircraft cabin, which stopped being true in January 2021
- That a service dog can be certified or registered, which is not a thing
- A promise that any landlord must say yes
- A statistic we can't back up with a source
- A state law we have not read ourselves
Review
Pages about clinical matters are reviewed by a licensed mental health professional. Pages about the law are reviewed by [name and role]. Every page shows when it was last updated.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell us at support@onlineesaletter.com. We fix errors and note the change rather than quietly editing the page.
Independence
We sell letters, which means we have an obvious interest in you buying one. We try to handle that honestly: our pages say when you would be better off asking your own therapist, and when a cheaper option is the right one. [Disclose any affiliate relationships here.]
