ESA Letter Benefits
An ESA letter does a small number of things, and it does them well. Here's the honest list, plus the things it can't do, so you know before you pay.
What an ESA Letter Gets You
Keep your pet in a no-pets building
This is the main one. Under the Fair Housing Act, a support animal is not a pet, so a no-pets policy generally has to give way to a reasonable accommodation request backed by a real letter.
Skip pet rent, pet fees, and pet deposits
Landlords generally can't charge these for a support animal. Over a year of pet rent, that difference is usually larger than the cost of the letter. You still pay for any real damage.
Avoid weight and breed limits
Building rules that cap an animal's weight or ban certain breeds generally don't apply to an assistance animal, unless your specific animal is actually dangerous.
Cover more than one animal
If more than one animal is part of your treatment, one letter can name them all. Your landlord will look at each one separately, so each is named and described.
Have something in writing
A dated letter with a license number on it turns a conversation into a documented request. If things go wrong later, that paper trail is what a fair housing agency will ask for.
Get a real clinical opinion
The visit itself has value. A licensed professional looking at your symptoms may tell you something useful about them, whether or not a letter comes out of it.
What It Doesn't Get You
Anyone promising you these is selling something that doesn't exist.
- A registration, certificate, ID card, or vest
- No registry in the US gives your pet any legal rights. If someone sells you "registration," you are buying a souvenir.
- A guaranteed yes from your landlord
- Landlords can call to check the letter. In a few narrow cases, they can still say no.
- A seat on a plane for an ESA
- Since January 2021, airlines have not had to treat emotional support animals as service animals. Most now treat them as pets.
- Service dog training
- A psychiatric service dog has to be trained to do real tasks. A letter can write that down. It can't do the training for you.

What is the biggest benefit of an ESA letter?
Housing. Under the Fair Housing Act a support animal isn't a pet, so a no-pets building generally has to consider your request, and pet rent and pet deposits generally don't apply. For most people that saving is larger than the letter costs.
Does an ESA letter help with air travel?
No. A Department of Transportation rule that took effect in January 2021 lets airlines treat emotional support animals as pets, and almost all of them do. If you need to fly with a trained psychiatric service dog, that's a different letter and a different process.
Can I take my ESA into stores and restaurants?
No. Public access under the ADA is for service animals that are individually trained to perform tasks. An emotional support animal doesn't have that right, and no letter or ID card changes it.
Does an ESA letter override breed and weight limits?
