Ask yourself a plain question: if the housing problem disappeared tomorrow, would you still want to be talking to someone? If yes, start with care and let the letter follow. If no, a single evaluation is honest and cheaper.

The 7 Questions Worth Asking Either Service
Is the provider licensed in your state?
This is the only thing that makes a letter work. A landlord verifies the license against a public state register, and a license from the wrong state fails immediately. Ask before you pay.
Is there a real evaluation?
A questionnaire that returns an instant decision is not a clinical evaluation. If a landlord phones the signer and finds no record of an assessment, the request fails.
When do they charge you?
Paying after approval and getting a refund after a denial are not the same thing. One never takes your money; the other takes it and returns it on the company's timetable.
Do they sell registrations, ID cards or vests?
No US registry, certificate or ID card gives an animal any legal right. A service selling them either doesn't know that or is counting on you not knowing.
What do they say about air travel?
Airlines stopped having to accept emotional support animals in January 2021. Any site still advertising ESA cabin access is working from stale information.
Which law do they cite for housing?
It's the Fair Housing Act, not the ADA. A service promising 'full ADA protections' for an emotional support animal has the statute wrong, which tells you something about the rest of their advice.
Can you read the refund terms before buying?
