Why Speed Is the Wrong Headline Number

This is the stage that genuinely varies, and it is the one nobody advertises. Your provider has to be licensed in your state, so availability depends on how many licensed professionals a service has where you live. A platform with deep coverage in California may have thin coverage in Wyoming.
Stage two: the clinical decision
This should not be instant, and you should be suspicious when it is. A licensed professional needs to ask about your history, your symptoms and how your animal affects them. A form that returns a decision the moment you submit it has not done that, whatever the marketing says.

When people ask how fast they can get an ESA letter, they usually mean something else: will this letter work when my landlord looks at it? Speed only matters because a lease deadline is approaching, and a letter that arrives on time but gets refused has solved nothing.
Your housing provider is entitled to contact the professional who signed the letter and confirm it is real. That call is the actual test. It asks whether the signer holds a current license in your state and whether they evaluated you. A same-day letter with nobody behind it fails on the first question.

The 7 Questions Worth Asking Either Service
Ask these of us, of Pettable, and of anyone else you're considering. The answers separate a letter that holds up from one that doesn't, and none of them is about speed.
Is the provider licensed in your state?
This is the only thing that makes a letter work. A landlord verifies the license against a public state register, and a license from the wrong state fails immediately. Ask before you pay.
Is there a real evaluation?
A questionnaire that returns an instant decision is not a clinical evaluation. If a landlord phones the signer and finds no record of an assessment, the request fails.
When do they charge you?
Paying after approval and getting a refund after a denial are not the same thing. One never takes your money; the other takes it and returns it on the company's timetable.
Do they sell registrations, ID cards or vests?
No US registry, certificate or ID card gives an animal any legal right. A service selling them either doesn't know that or is counting on you not knowing.
What do they say about air travel?
Airlines stopped having to accept emotional support animals in January 2021. Any site still advertising ESA cabin access is working from stale information.
Which law do they cite for housing?
It's the Fair Housing Act, not the ADA. A service promising 'full ADA protections' for an emotional support animal has the statute wrong, which tells you something about the rest of their advice.
Can you read the refund terms before buying?
Look at the conditions rather than the headline. 'Money-back guarantee' often excludes the case you actually care about, which is a landlord saying no.
How to Read a Turnaround Guarantee
Some services attach a money-back guarantee to their speed claim. Read what the guarantee actually covers, because the interesting case is usually excluded.

- Does it cover a landlord refusing the letter, which is the outcome you care about?
- Is the consultation fee carved out of the refund?
- Is it a refund or a credit toward another service?
- How long do you have to claim it, and who decides?
This is also why we moved to charging only after approval rather than offering a refund. A refund is a promise to give your money back on the company's timetable. Not taking it in the first place removes the argument.
When Neither of Us Is the Right Answer
If you already see a therapist, counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist, ask them first. Someone who has treated you for months can describe your history in a way no single 20-minute visit can match, and that depth is exactly what holds up under scrutiny. If your sessions are covered by insurance, your extra cost may be nothing at all.
Online services exist for people without that relationship, or whose clinician has a blanket policy against writing letters. That is a real gap and it is who we serve. It is not everyone.
