Legitimate PSD Letters for Illinois Residents
A letter from a professional licensed in Illinois, documenting your mental health disability and the tasks your dog is trained to perform. You pay nothing until they approve you.
Illinois runs its own fair housing enforcement through the Illinois Department of Human Rights, so a housing dispute here can be taken up at state level as well as federally. Visits are by video or phone, covering Chicago, Aurora, Naperville and everywhere else in the state.

The Training Is What Makes a Service Dog
A dog becomes a psychiatric service dog by being individually trained to perform tasks that help with a disability. Not by being registered, not by wearing a vest, and not by a letter. If your dog is not task-trained yet, an ESA letter is the honest choice in Illinois and it costs less.
Trained tasks
What Counts as a Task
A task is something the dog actively does. Comfort from its presence alone is not a task — that is the line between a PSD and an ESA.
- Carrying medication or emergency information in a vest pocket
- Reminding you to take medication at a set time
- Room searching before you enter, for PTSD-related fear
- Blocking or creating space between you and other people in a queue
- Retrieving a drink so you can take medication
- Applying tactile stimulation to interrupt a flashback
- Deep pressure therapy to reduce anxiety
Where It Applies in Illinois
- Public access — ADA
- Staff may ask two questions only: is the dog required because of a disability, and what tasks has it been trained to perform.
- Housing — Fair Housing Act
- Pet rent, deposits, breed bans and weight caps generally do not apply to an assistance animal.
- Air travel — DOT form
- Airlines accept trained service dogs using the Department of Transportation form, which you sign yourself.
No letter creates any of these. They come from the training.

Where to Complain in Illinois
Housing complaints in Illinois are handled by the Illinois Department of Human Rights, and you can also file federally with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. A public accommodation that refused a trained service dog is an ADA matter, which goes to the US Department of Justice.

Questions
Illinois PSD Letter FAQs
How do I get a psychiatric service dog letter in Illinois?
Complete the free screening, meet a mental health professional licensed in Illinois for a visit by video or phone, and if they approve you your signed PDF arrives within 10 minutes. The letter documents your disability and the tasks your dog performs. It does not train your dog and it does not certify it, because no certification for service dogs exists.
Does a PSD letter certify my service dog in Illinois?
No, and nothing does. There is no certification, registration or licensing for service dogs in Illinois or anywhere else in the US, and the Department of Justice states that registration documents convey no rights. What makes a dog a psychiatric service dog is individual training to perform tasks that mitigate a disability.
What if my Illinois housing provider asks for proof of training?
For housing, a provider may ask for documentation of a disability-related need for the animal. They generally cannot require certification, registration, an ID card, or that the dog demonstrate its tasks. If you are asked for those specifically, say in writing that no such certification exists in the US.
Can I fly out of Illinois with my psychiatric service dog?
Yes. Trained service dogs are still accepted by airlines. Carriers require the Department of Transportation's Service Animal Air Transportation Form, which you complete and sign yourself. A clinician's letter can support your case, but the DOT form is the document airlines actually ask for — a letter does not replace it.
Is it illegal to pass a pet off as a service dog in Illinois?
Misrepresenting a pet as a service animal is a criminal offence in many states, and penalties vary. Beyond the legal risk, it makes life harder for handlers with genuinely trained dogs, which is why we will not sell you a certificate or an ID card for an untrained animal.
Do I need a PSD letter to go in public with my dog in Illinois?
No. Under the ADA, staff may ask only two questions: whether the dog is a service animal required because of a disability, and what work or tasks it has been trained to perform. They cannot demand paperwork, ask about your diagnosis, or require the dog to demonstrate a task. Many handlers still want a letter for housing and for the conversation with a landlord.
How much does a PSD letter cost in Illinois?
$149 for a letter covering up to two dogs and $229 for up to three. It costs more than an ESA letter because the visit is longer — the professional documents both your disability and the specific tasks your dog performs. You are charged only after a licensed provider approves you.
Can a psychiatric service dog be any breed in Illinois?
Yes. The ADA does not restrict service animals by breed, and breed bans in a housing provider's pet policy generally do not apply to an assistance animal. A housing provider can only object based on your individual dog's actual conduct or history.
